Heart rate

Ok so maybe it's 'cause I'm feeling a bit like I've eaten far too much of the wrong thing of late (well, it is Christmas!!). But I thought I'd actually see what my heart rate is. If I'm any good, I'll check this over the next few days to see what my average is. But anyway today:

1500, large lunch an hour ago, just had dessert, 78bpm resting (30 secs x2)

I'm finding it hard to find a definitive 'healthy range' but from what I can tell anything over 80 isn't good. Different sites seem undecided as to whether 60-80 is ok or 70-80. Either way, I'm pushing 80. I will try and remember to count tomorrow morning before getting up as that's when you're supposed to test it.

I would guess my recovery rate is fairly good though, it feels like it usually is. I will have a check next time I do some exercise which hopefully will be in a few days!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas folks!

So I'm at my parents' house over the hols and I'm really missing my pole! As a result, I'm spending a lot more time on the various online pole communities and I'd forgotten how much that inspires me! It's making me miss my pole even more but in a good way. There are lots of things I know I need to work on and so this post is going to be a little bit of a training list with some links to rather good bits and bobs...

Spinning Scorpio / Scorpio Switch.

So there's a discussion on Studio Veena about this, after seeing Christina Aguchi do it at 0:29 in this video.

There are two great tutorials on it as a result from Charley and Veena.

Scorpio is an annoying move for me. I don't like it! I think it's a mental block. I can Gemini fine, can quite happily do the Gemini/Scorpio switch but I don't like the Scorp on its own. Go figure!

Spinning scorpio looks so so lovely so this will be a nice move to get. It's also a combo as opposed to just a new move.

I remember when I'd get all ecstatic when I got a new move and be all hyper. My x-knee release springs to mind! And I did whoop all over the pole studio when I handspringed into a straight edge and held it. But things like the hip hold just happened and also the caterpillar, cupid etc. It's like just getting a static move isn't enough of a sense of achievement any more (yeah, I know, I'm always pushing myself) and so to get a combo like this I think will really fire me up! :)

My pole practice has changed loads from when I first started. Then, it was move after move with not as much dancing. Now, I don't practice tricks that much and I just dance a lot. I need to get back into practicing tricks and transitioning them as well as into and out of them.

Various combos!

This video blew me away! Some of the combos were so original (to me at least) and really exciting.

0:16 Reverse grab to legs up on the pole!

0:55 Pole climb to split grip hold, swing to reverse grab to stag (i.e pretzel spin hold)

1:05 SM backwards roll to floor (note legs go opposite side to head)

1:09 Same but landing on pole in fireman

1:30 Now that's a reverse grab pretzel spin! She does something different with her arm too

1:38 Flyover to pole sit - I need to practise this one

1:53 Nice backwards hook on static pole - something else for to me to practise as this isn't one I do on static really.

2:18 SM to crucifix then jump down?!

2:34 True handspring (?) to wrist sit by swinging bottom leg through (and then swingthrough dismount to splits)

2:53 Teddy swing variations

3:14 Gemini to superman. Fairly standard I know, but I can only superman from a flatline scorpio so it's one for me to try now I'm used to the superman.

And YouTube seems to be having a mad moment so I can't view the rest but - so much stuff to try in a short space of time. I love this girl!

Other things I know I have to work on:

Air invert.
I can so this. I know I can but it feels like such an effort. I really need to work on my core strength some more. I know I've lost lots with not poling so much (lack of lessons; too cold at home to practise) so this is a real key thing for me that will move my dancing onto the next level.

Inverting on opposite side
Gah. This is a nightmare for me. Again, I know I need to be able to do this. I also know I'm worse than a beginner for it!

To do:
  • Practise basic invert on non-dom side
  • Practise getting into gemini from crucifix on non-dom side
  • Crucifix with opposite legs to what I usually use and thigh holding from there.
I also have to be determined not to get discouraged when I can't do it - this is one of my biggest downfalls. Sometimes I just get in a strop and give up! This is not acceptable...

Shouldermount

I can do this. I have to do it more and more - it's there but not polished.

Caterpillar climb

Ditto. I can do this but not reliably - sometimes when I push out I fall to the side and have to come down again (does anyone know what this indicates?). I need to have this ok to get the Aysha.

Flag

Practise practise practise. Nuff said.

Yogini

So, I had said I wouldn't do armpit holds til forced to by my instructor. Well, as I don't have lessons that often these days, I figure I ought to start giving it a go.

Teddy

Likewise. Owch. But trying it a little each time should be done. In true pole move fashion, one day it will just click.

Upper body strength

This needs working on to help with Aysha and split grip inverts. At the moment I don't feel strong enough to feel stable.

Handstands

Often forgotten!

Chin ups!

Oh yeah! I can do a full chin up on a bar! How chuffing pleased am I??!!

I'm not going to announce a new years resolution to pole more or blog more or whatever else it won't happen. I'm just going to carry on being me and see what happens :)
